Quantitative VS Qualitative

  • Quantitative evaluation focuses on what is true.
  • Qualitative evaluation focuses on answering the question “Why?”

Best evaluations are when you combine quantitative and qualitative techniques.

The key is always knowing the purpose of the evaluation.

Types of Evaluation

Purpose Stage
Formative Improve a design Development
Summative Find if the product “is good enough” Contractual/sales
Investigative/Exploratory Gain understanding Research/early in a design process

It is very easy to confuse these goals; you might have an exploratory goal but you might address your experiment in order to reach a good enough answer. This would be an error.

If you know what you are trying to address, you can then tune your evaluation for that.
